JANE SCULLY is a senior writer, editor, researcher/reporter and photojournalist who specializes in starting up publications and projects, creating visual identity and design, and managing book and magazine production. Innovative, creative and organized, she has provided conceptual, editorial and production direction for groups as diverse as World Resources Institute, Fairfax County, and the Doctors’ Brigade of Virginia Hospital Center. A long-time editor of Environment magazine and creator of Resources, an award-winning consumer publication and web site, she is working on projects that combine the written and the visual for maximum project impact.

EDITORIAL PROJECTS
Photojournalist for Doctors Brigade in Honduras. In its ninth year, this committed non-profit group of 80-plus members returned to mountain villages 100 miles outside of Tegucigalpa to treat infants and children, give vision tests and issue appropriate donated prescription glasses, provide physical therapy, and do eye and organ surgery at the local hospital. As photojournalist Scully took 2500 pictures and interviewed for 70 profiles and stories of staff and their reactions and of Honduran patients/families for the group’s web site.

Creator, editor, writer and designer of ResOURces, a start-up publication, and ResOURces Online. Both vehicles focus on the 32,000-acre park system in Fairfax County, VA. The web site's searchable database of birds and wildflowers is considered a model for effective website use. The publication received a national meritorious award in its first year, the web site in its second year.

Creator, editor, interviewer and concept developer for a history of the Fairfax County Park Authority, set against the background of a rural county turned almost fully urban, with a population of 1 million people. Built on 50 in-depth interviews as well as longitudinal economic and demographic data, the book focuses on how one organization reflected the major shifts along the way.

Managing Editor, Environment Magazine. Responsible for conducting and coordinating all editorial, peer review and production functions for one of the first and most influential environmental publications. Worked with international array of authors on all phases of article development, developing 75 manuscripts annually. Achieved a 92% renewal rate and received seven editorial awards.

Managing Editor, Houghton-Mifflin's first Environmental Almanac, through the World Resources Institute. Responsible for all conceptual planning, project development and management of this 606-page worldwide survey of environmental issues, a project requiring high scientific accuracy while reaching a broader "almanac" audience. Managed or wrote 35 major essays, 1400 charts and tables, and 100 sidebar pieces. Sold out run of 75,000 copies.

Substantive Editor, Global Biodiversity Assessment Project, commissioned and published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Edited an 80,000-word chapter manuscript written by 19 international authors on possible methods to preserve and sustainably use natural resources in an effort to protect biodiversity.

Conceptual Editor, Helping Teachers Meet the National Teaching Standards, funded by the Pew Charitable Trust for the George Washington University Institute for Education Policy.

Editor, writer and project manager for Twenty-Five Critical Years, an in-depth study of the histories of a group of Vassar College graduates over the vast social, cultural and political upheavals from 1965 to 1990.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Elected City Council Member, Falls Church City Council, Falls Church, VA. Responsible for establishing policy on diverse fiscal, social, public safety, land use and planning issues for a full-service city, managing a $30-million budget and establishing tax rates. Chairman of several state legislative and fiscal committees. Gave Congressional testimony on Telecommunications Bill on behalf of National League of Cities.

Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Member, Falls Church School Board, Falls Church, VA. Responsible for setting policy, overseeing staff performance and oversight of capital projects for this top-ten nationally ranked school system and for directing roles of members for effective management. Many statewide responsibilities. Frequent speaker at state meetings.
